ico-deductivism is a flawed rendering of how research actually occurs.

Co-written by David Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer, “It’s Raining Men” would be nothing without the powerhouse vocals of Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes-Armstead. that scholars used to establish gay and lesbian studies in the decades prior. “Tall, blonde, dark and lean.” The Weather Girls didn’t discriminate when it came to the male specimen, so, naturally, their disco-pop hit was adopted by all. Talking about Dancing on My Own, Jepsen notes that the lyrics are very visual: Robyn’s narrator is lonely enough to notice the stuff on the floorstilettos and broken bottles. Before it was blasted at every bat mitzvah, this 70s hit, with its infectious chorus and simple choreography, was a fixture at New York City’s gay clubs.ĭecades before Gaga’s gay anthem and pre-dating The Village People, Carl Bean brought gay pride to the clubs (and charts) on the 1977 Motown smash “I Was Born This Way.” Originally released as a disco single by Valentino, Bean brought his gospel-powered vocals to the track, as he proclaims, “I’m happy, I’m carefree and I’m gay/I was born this way.” The song has outlived disco through various remixes over the years and still sounds triumphant today. Composed with Patrik Berger, there is a sadness.

Inspired, in part, by Robyn’s love of sad, gay Disco anthems (such as Ultravox’s Dancing with Tears in My Eyes ), Robyn was clearly coming into her own and finding her voice. The rest of my Skype conversation with Robyn was spent talking about why she thinks it’s important artists understand the queer references they use in their work, the precise reason she’s proud Dancing On My Own became a gay anthem, and how her current post-tomboy femininity is, for her, almost like dragging. A decade later, the record’s biggest triumphs, Call Your Girlfriend and Dancing On My Own, are still in regular rotation at gay bars.

Defining gay anthem of the disco era or wholesome celebration of young male-oriented community centers? Coming from a band with the hit single “Macho Man” and an album called Cruisin’, you decide. Dancing on My Own is that mix of spurned anger and recklessness a strange sense of hope in confinement and heartache.
